Biodiesel is a domestic, renewable fuel for diesel engines derived from natural oils like soybean oil, and which meets the specifications of ASTM D 6751. Soy biodiesel is a clean-burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. For more information on biodiesel, visit www.biodiesel.org.
Soy biodiesel is one of the fastest-growing alternative fuels in the country. South Carolina has over 40 retailers selling biodiesel. To learn more about places to fill up with biodiesel click here.
To ensure biodiesel continues to grow in popularity, the soybean checkoff and NBB encourage producers to ask their suppliers if their biodiesel is BQ-9000-certified. The BQ-9000 program is a unique combination of the ASTM standard for biodiesel, ASTM D 6751, and a quality systems program that includes storage, sampling, testing, blending, shipping, distribution and fuel-management practices. BQ-9000 is open to any biodiesel manufacturer, marketer or distributor of biodiesel and biodiesel blends in the United States and Canada.
