The soybean is often called the miracle crop. It is the world's foremost provider of protein and oil. The oil is a common cooking oil and has other industrial uses, such as biodiesel, a sustainable biofuel growing in popularity. The protein is used primarily in livestock and fish feed.
More soybeans are grown in the United States than anywhere else in the world. In 2006, U.S. soybean farmers harvested a record 3.2 billion bushels of soybeans. More than half the total value of the U.S. soybean crop is exported as whole soybeans, soybean meal and soybean oil.
